Two weeks in to 2013! We have this same thing every year. The same people who join mysteriously disappear by the end of January. So what are you doing to change that…

What makes your facility unique?
Stick with me on this one…I’m going to take the scenic route to make my point. But first a quote (please read the first sentence as to why we are starting with a quote). “People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, okay? They come to Chotchkie’s for the atmosphere and the attitude. Okay? That’s what the flair’s about. It’s about fun.” And that’s what today’s blog is about flair…specifcally what goes into making a buying decision. Flair. That and a good cheeseburger…

Why in the world would your members choose you?
Stay with me on this one. I’m going to take the long route to make a good point. A few weeks ago my wife sent me to the grocery store to buy cereal. And the choices were dizzying. Chex, Trix, Kix, Cheerios, Froot Loops, Mueslix (I don’t know how to get the two dots to appear above my u). And even here amongst the cornucopia of colors I learned something that I think is applicable to the health and wellness industry…

Why is our industry just average?
The Pareto Principle, aka the 80-20 rule, is perhaps the single greatest example of a cliché in business. If you are not familiar with the 80-20 rule, let me explain. Better yet, let me summarize. Named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, (the most influential Italian since Chef Boyardee!) it basically says everything in business and even life is split 80-20. Whether it’s 80% of the land is owned by 20% of the people, or 80% of the peas come from 20% of the pods.

The children are not our future.
And the sky is red. Water is dry. And if you believe all that then have I got a bridge to sell to you. So why have I decided to make fun of our industry this week. Because I’m sick of making fun of myself. But mainly because nothing irritates me more than short sightedness. Want to know why no matter what we do, we still can’t get more than 17% of the population to join a gym? Let me tell you why…

There’s a lot to learn from shutting up and listening.
Have you ever heard the song by Madonna, “Cherrio Girl.” Probably not. You know why? Because she never sang a song called “Cherrio Girl.” Unfortunately for me, I thought it was one of her best songs ever. If only I had taken the time to listen closely, I would know that she was singing the song “Material Girl.” It would have saved me quite a bit of embarrassment, and at least one atomic wedgie! Stay with me on this one, there is something here that might be helpful to your business…

Opportunity in numbers
I think one of the reasons we are all attracted to the health and wellness industry is the people. I’ve worked in lots of places (even had a job at McDonald’s for one day) and I can’t think of an industry that has brought together a group as energetic, excited, and motivated as us (sure I’m the software guy but let me join the group for just a second!) And since I know that people are very often motivated by numbers, I thought I’d throw out a few for you. Nothing ground breaking – just a reminder of why we must stay so energetic, excited and motivated and what exactly our opportunity is.

What we can learn from P90X
Late night TV is great. I can watch reruns of Cheers or better still watch Christie Brinkley and Chuck Norris wax poetic about my good friends at Total Gym. But best of all, I get to see before and after pics of people who have bought the P90X DVD workout set for not $250, not $219, but just two payments of $69 plus S&H. And it was the P90X that really grabbed my attention. Why? Because It occurred to me that for the first time, in a long time, people are buying the truth.

Is Phillip Morris your real competition?
I hate to do this but its time. It’s time to bring out “Angry Hossein.” There are a lot of reason I don’t like to bring out “Angry Hossein”. Mainly he scares me. (That being said, I love talking about my alter egos in the third person, so I have to acknowledge that bonus.) Either way, Angry Hossein has a point, and it has to do with smoking cigarettes and the success of the gym industry.
