Out of Order

So I’m often asked what is the genesis for the ideas for this blog? What smart food do I eat to make the magic happen? Is it Blueberries, or maybe acai fruit, or perhaps its hamburgers?? No. No. Yes!! But in reality most of the ideas come from you guys. I talk to owners and managers every day, and it’s during these interaction that the ridiculousness of this blog comes together…so what happened this week that has me up in hamburgers? (It’s safer then arms and much tastier…read on to find out)

How to earn your MBA by simply reading this blog.

February 23, 2012
Categories: Club Management

I warn you this blog will be chock full of clichés. I could say things like “there is nothing common about common sense.” I’ll talk about your core competency, I could make references to a box and how you should think outside it, and last but not least, I hope by the end, you are drinking the Kool-Aid. So what could I possibly be talking about? How to run your business using clichés and succeeding of course!

What are you planning on doing in 2012?

December 15, 2011
Categories: Club Management

If you’re like most gym owners, you’ve spent the last 6 weeks preparing for 2012 asking all the questions; WHAT am I going to buy, HOW many people will I hire, WHERE will I open my next location, WHO will I give a raise/promotion too, WHY is this guy Hossein so hilarious, and WHEN are we getting the next top 10 signs they should post in gyms? I’m sure you’ll read many Top 10 lists over the next two weeks, but here’s the first: after speaking to over 75 owners/operators, this is a summary of what I heard.

What kind of buyer are you?

November 17, 2011
Categories: Club ManagementCustomer ServiceNew Technology

Every so often, I need to turn the spotlight and have it focus on us, Motionsoft, and what we do. I’m not talking about the webinars, or the FMG, or even this blog. For once I’m actually talking about software and billing. And specifically, what we have created in MoSo, and why we think it will help the industry. Don’t worry I’ll make it funny so it won’t be a complete waste of your time :)

The role of a gym/wellness center in the community…

If you lived in the 1800’s in the wild Wild West, in any frontier town, it was likely that the saloon was the epicenter. It drew people from every walk of life. It acted as a de facto town hall in many cases. And it didn’t discriminate. In a lot of ways, your facility is a lot like the saloon except instead of bar fights, you offer body combat. Instead of serving whiskey, we have Muscle Milk. So what am I talking about here??

The Butterfly Effect

August 25, 2011
Categories: Club Management

The Butterfly Effect is a principle of Chaos Theory . (This blog has really come a long way since the Top 10 signs!) It states that in any dynamic system, small initial differences may over time lead to large unforeseen consequences. I had to ask my 6 year old niece, Mila, to help put that into context for our industry. She said, “Uncle Hossein, that means early small decisions can lead to big bad consequences.” And I had an aha moment.

How to hire the best people

July 28, 2011
Categories: Club Management

It’s a known fact that people like to surround themselves with likeminded people. For me that means people who are funny, good looking, smart, and interesting. As it turns out, the only person I can tolerate is the Dos Equis guy. You know, the most interesting man in the world. On occasion we allow Chuck Norris to hang out with us, but we both find it a bit annoying when he starts with the Chuck Norris quotes. But it got me thinking about owners and employees…

Screaming: The newest communication tool

June 30, 2011
Categories: Club Management

Clichés are great. You can say a lot without actually saying anything. Some would argue (not to my face) that is the secret to my success. But that’s only MOSTLY true. Every now and then I have something substantive to say. Read on to find out if this is one of those times.

Could your gym be a Walmart?

I recently learned about Moore’s Law. Basically it says every two years we can double the number of transistors on an integrated circ-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Who cares. What is really important is that more and more things are becoming a science, and less and less things are about art. That is the definition of bad news if you are a liberal arts major. So how can you apply Moore’s Law to your business…
