What you don’t realize about Facebook marketing

March 21, 2013

So why am I showing you this picture? Well, for starters, I created it and it’s clearly “hi-lar-ious!” But there are actually two reasons. 1) To prove the power of Facebook and how Motionsoft can actually help you generate revenue through it (See more at IHRSA booth 940!). And 2)? To give the cliff notes on why these pictures, called Memes, are even more important than you realize.

The Most Interesting Man in the World

First, the power of Facebook. If you’ve seen these pictures, it was probably on Facebook. Right? And that’s my whole point. People put these pics, called Advice Animals, on Facebook, and they get seen by their social network. It’s likely you’ve only seen them because someone you know shared them on Facebook. Maybe you liked it. Maybe you even shared it. But at least you saw it. And that’s what Motionsoft’s myClub Social Media features do (available for a demo this week at IHRSA!). We make it easy for people to refer you to their friends on Facebook, as part of their member experience. If you like their meme, you might also like their gym.

Second, did you know there is a whole culture with memes? Essentially, they are user generated stories about recurring characters. They aren’t just pictures. They are stories that millions of meme readers are engaged in. Did you know that? If you did, well, then go get back to Reddit. And if you didn’t, well, that’s my point. You need to understand what your customers are doing outside the gym and how to effectively engage them.

And now, in the spirit of Top 10 Signs We’d like to See in Gyms, it’s your insiders guide to 10 of the Top Meme’s with help from knowyourmeme.com. (All with a special Fitness Spin! Maybe you think they’re funny. Maybe you think they’re not. But that’s memes! As always, no intent to offend.)

Motionsoft’s Guide to Ten of the Top Memes

10. Scumbag Steve

Scumbag Steve

Scumbag Steve generally centers around unethical behavior regarding drugs, partying, and other hedonistic behaviors. In particular, whatever action he is going to take usually burdens the reader as well.

9. Overly Attached Girlfriend

Overly Attached Girlfriend

Overly Attached Girlfriend features a young woman smiling and staring manically at the camera that has been captioned in a way that portrays her to be a stalker, jealous, or committed to her love interest to an unhealthy degree.

8. Confession Bear

Confession Bear

Confession Bear is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photo of a Malayan sun bear leaning against a log. The images are captioned with confessions about taboo behaviors and controversial opinions that are often kept secret for fear of being ostracized.

7. Actual Advice Mallard

Actual Advice Mallard

This male wild duck is accompanied by captions containing useful bits of information. Beware his red-headed antitheses, Malicious Advice Mallard, who’s advice will almost certainly lead you down a bad road.

5. Friend Zone Fiona

Every guy’s fear – the platonic hot girl friend! The top refers to something a girl would say romantically followed by the bottom text confirming that she is just a friend.

4. Sudden Clarity Clarence

Sudden Clarity Clarence

3. Good Guy Greg

Good Guy Greg

Good Guy Greg (GGG) features a photo of a man smiling at the camera with a marijuana cigarette in his mouth. As the antithesis of Scumbag Steve, Greg looks like he might be a trouble maker but the captions generally depict him as kind, generous or empathetic to other people.

2. First World Problems

First World Problems

First World Problems are frustrations and complaints that are only experienced by privileged individuals in wealthy countries. It is typically used as a tongue-in-cheek comedic device to make light of trivial inconveniences.

1. Success Kid

Success Kid

This image taken from Quickmeme.com.

Everything that happens to Success Kid turns out as a positive experience. Even when things go wrong. Taking Lemons and making lemonade. Isn’t that what life’s all about?

So…Did you find these funny?

Well, here is the thing…it doesn’t matter if you did or didn’t. The fact is millions of people do. Your members do. And that’s the thing to remember. Stop thinking about the thing you do in your life and start thinking about the things they do in theirs.
