Social Media is Dead

If anybody tells you otherwise they are selling you snake oil. There is no such thing as social media. The collective users of Twitter, LinkedIn, Badoo, MySpace, Friendster, and Renren are still less than the total number of users on Facebook. So let’s stop calling it social media, and let’s start calling it what it really is…Facebook. So why is Angry Hossein…well angry today? Let me tell you.
Angry Hossein is angry because I still talk with gym owners who think the best way to get referrals is by giving away a grill. Or an iPad. While you are at it why not just give up completely and do what banks did in the 80s and give away a toaster. It’s a joke. It doesn’t work well. And if one of my friends was willing to give up my name, phone number and email for a chance to win a grill, I can assure you they wouldn’t be my friend for long!
So let me talk myself off this ledge and at the same time impart some good advice. First, never fight a land war (Princess Brides fans anyone) but I digress…I gotta tell you being a split personality is hard work!
I have a theory about mirrors in a gym. The reason we have so many mirrors has nothing to do with maintaining form, but rather it’s to remind the owners that the people who you should be marketing to join your facility, look an awful lot “like” your existing members. Before you ask, yes I have already submitted this theory to be considered for the Nobel Prize in Economics.
So let’s tie this whole blog up into one cute little bow. What’s the best way to find people who “like” the same things your members “like.” The answer is obvious…social media…DOH. I mean Facebook.
But how do you do it. It’s not easy. But it’s also not hard. You need to think about it, and you can’t have a 19 year old kid do it for you. And you don’t need to be paying someone else. With a little bit of knowledge and the right tools, you too can help prevent any future sightings of Angry Hossein. Next week we are having a free webinar on how to use Facebook properly to create a powerful source of referrals for your facility.
