What Get, Keep & Know your members is about

Earlier this week I got my February issue of CBI. There’s nothing I enjoy more than starting a fire, putting on my favorite slippers, and getting into my favorite chair to leisurely read my latest CBI. Except it was 64 degrees outside, I only have Crocs, and it would be hard to select any particular one of my chairs as “the favorite”. But I did have CBI. And I was absolutely shocked by what I saw…

My brother! Okay, it wasn’t shock as I did know he’d done this interview, but it was exciting to see. If you haven’t yet, check out CBI First Person with Al Noshirvani (Page 27 in the Feb 2012 issue).
Al discussed the goal behind our recent venture funding – to help us create technology for the fitness industry that isn’t just about checking people in but is actually about winning the game of acquisition, retention and finding revenue opportunities.

As I kept flipping through though, I noticed that it seems like every page in CBI talks about some company with some new gadget. Now don’t get me wrong technology is amazing. I’m a fan of technology. I’m a founder of a technology company. But technology for the sake of technology is actually, sort of, an empty thing.
So, as I compared those images to Al’s “mission” in the article, I had to ask myself – why was our technology more than just another gadget? Why are we building MoSo – our next generation member management software? And it became clear. So while Al had his glory in print, I wanted to share my version right here. Our software isn’t just better. It isn’t just the only software in the cloud. We didn’t just build something to say it’s newer and shiny.
We built MoSo for your business. We built MoSo so you can run your facility better. We put MoSo in the cloud so you wouldn’t have to worry about updates and upgrades. We integrated the myClub webportal and the Data Warehouse so your interaction with people left you with more than just fields filled out in a form. We did so you can GET more members. We did so you can KEEP more members. We did so you can KNOW your members better.
It’s not just a catchy tagline. It’s about you and yours. It’s the reason we don’t say MoSo is better, that would be about us. It’s the reason we call it Betterville. Betterville is you, your business, and your members. It’s a place where you are all connected, happy and more efficient – a place that you like. Your gym is an ecosystem. Yes, it needs to get granular in its tasks, functions and features, but the overall idea, is that it makes your whole world – and your members whole world – a better place. People will pay for that, and keep paying for that, so they can keep having it. Like GPS, heated seats, google, online reservations, Facebook, and video-on-demand, & free 30 minute oil changes. They aren’t just about cool technology. They work together (and believe it or not, all of those things I’ve listed do) to create technology-driven life improvements that you wouldn’t want to ever go backwards from.
That’s what technology does. It improves your life. And if technology doesn’t do that, then you shouldn’t buy it. If it doesn’t make it easy to go from where you are, to a whole better place, than what’s so great about it? So the next time you see someone say their technology or gadget is newer or better, think about why they are saying that? Is it better for them or for you? Because nothing is worse than technology for the sake of technology. Now where did I put my smoking jacket and pipe?? I’ll just ask my robotic dog to find it.
