The role of a gym/wellness center in the community…

September 29, 2011

If you lived in the 1800’s in the wild Wild West, in any frontier town, it was likely that the saloon was the epicenter. It drew people from every walk of life. It acted as a de facto town hall in many cases. And it didn’t discriminate. In a lot of ways, your facility is a lot like the saloon except instead of bar fights, you offer body combat. Instead of serving whiskey, we have Muscle Milk. So what am I talking about here??

Shouldn’t your club have its own Shark Week?

August 4, 2011
Categories: Promoting Your Gym

I love Shark Week. Not because I have some deep love for watching the ocean’s apex predator swim through crystal clear blue waters while some insane cameraman films the whole thing. And it’s not because I have a particularly deep affinity to saving sharks (I do feel like I’m helping out by NOT eating shark fin soup!). No, the real reason I like Shark Week, is because it is an example of the kind of marketing that every gym owner should be thinking about.

Are you missing a huge marketing opportunity?

January 20, 2011
Categories: Club Management

I knew it’d happen. I knew an FMG deal would excite and inspire me to write a blog (and keep me from going to bed at 2am). (Fun regular reader fact – when I talk in my sleep, I reference Burger King, not McDonalds. Fascinating, no?) Anyways, this week’s FMG Deal is for telephone on-hold marketing. And it really got me thinking. It helps you sell. It helps you retain. It keeps callers interested! The chance to engage members is right under your nose (the phone?)! If you aren’t doing it, why not?

Are you modifying your members’ behavior?

January 6, 2011
Categories: Member Retention

The best Christmas present you probably received (that wasn’t a Snuggie) is all those people whose New Year’s resolution was to lose weight, get healthy, and go to the gym. And like clockwork, on Jan 2nd folks were ready to go. Unfortunately, by March, the only relationship you will have with a lot of these people is their names are in your database. So, while the question most members are asking themselves is “will this year be different?”, “will I follow through?” – we should be asking “how are we going to help make it different?

The Box Inside the Box

December 10, 2010
Categories: Club Management

Think about it for a second, a gym is a collision of worlds. It’s a place where retail meets customer services, mixed in with some maintenance, a pinch of a restaurant and banking, and some salesmanship thrown in for good measure. And though most gym owners are truly renaissance men and women, not everybody is great at everything. As a result more and more owners are selling of some of these portions of the business. Selling boxes inside their box.

Can you and your members outsmart procrastination?

November 11, 2010
Categories: Member RetentionMembership Management

My new favorite blog is journalist David McRaney’s YouAreNotSoSmart.com (I prefer reading things that ridicule me, hence my subscriptions to Your Brother’s Better Looking Weekly and The You Snore Times). McRaney’s newest post is a great look at whether you can outsmart procrastination. With our launch of FillMyGym (basically anti-procrastination shopping) and the approach of the Annual New Years Resoution sweepstakes, it got me thinking about what we do to outsmart procrastination…

What other industries can learn from US!

July 30, 2010

Membership has its benefits…I’ve written a lot about what we can learn from other industries (fast food, airlines, etc.) and there is a lot to learn by watching some of the best companies and applying their practices to running a gym. BUT (there is always a BUT), there are a lot of things that other industries can learn from us…
