The Worst Four Letter Word in Business

May 17, 2012

I know lots of four letter words. I can’t remember when I learned them but I think I was late to the game, and more importantly, I know how to use them now. And boy oh boy can I string them together! In business, there are lots of four letter words too. But there is one in particular that every one of us knows and despises. It’s the one word that can make us explode in anger, or cower in the corner.

My favorite children’s book growing up was by Shel Silverstein – The Giving Tree. If you have never read this book, well in many ways you are dead to me :) . But you have a chance to redeem yourself, and you can do it quickly. Go to Amazon right now and buy it. Have it shipped overnight, and you can read it from beginning to end in about 7 minutes. There are a lot of great lessons in The Giving Tree, and one of them is something that can help your business grow…

Well, after sitting in on Bryan O’Rourke’s webinar for Gold’s Gym Franchise Association (GGFA) yesterday on the subject of Millennials, I can tell you, you may have a War of 1812 on your hands.

So I’m often asked what is the genesis for the ideas for this blog? What smart food do I eat to make the magic happen? Is it Blueberries, or maybe acai fruit, or perhaps its hamburgers?? No. No. Yes!! But in reality most of the ideas come from you guys. I talk to owners and managers every day, and it’s during these interaction that the ridiculousness of this blog comes together…so what happened this week that has me up in hamburgers? How to judge a book by its cover…

April 5, 2012

Here is what I find fascinating. A personal size pizza (4 slices) is only about 600 calories. I can’t get over that. That being said, the other thing I find fascinating is how much diversity there is in the fitness industry. So in an attempt to be able to better recognize gym owners, I have created a quick guide to know what kind of owner you are meeting simply by what they are wearing…I warn you this is about as shallow as I can possibly be.

Social Media is Dead

March 29, 2012
Categories: Promoting Your Gym

If anybody tells you otherwise they are selling you snake oil. There is no such thing as social media. The collective users of Twitter, LinkedIn, Badoo, MySpace, Friendster, and Renren are still less than the total number of users on Facebook. So let’s stop calling it social media, and let’s start calling it what it really is…Facebook. So why is Angry Hossein…well angry today? Let me tell you.

March 22, 2012
Categories: Promoting Your Gym

Do you remember my 13 Reasons why I thought you shouldn’t go to IHRSA? Of course, I was being facetious. You don’t want to miss IHRSA. But I did have one hesitancy. It was a seed planted in my head by our VP of Communications, Leigh (who you may recognize from such webinars as “Understanding Retail: The art & Science of Retail-ology” and “How to create sales scripts for your staff – part 2”. Both available on demand!). So do you want to know the one reason I really didn’t want to go to IHRSA?
