The Butterfly Effect is a principle of Chaos Theory . (This blog has really come a long way since the Top 10 signs!) It states that in any dynamic system, small initial differences may over time lead to large unforeseen consequences. I had to ask my 6 year old niece, Mila, to help put that into context for our industry. She said, “Uncle Hossein, that means early small decisions can lead to big bad consequences.” And I had an aha moment.

Everybody has car insurance…why not a gym membership?
A few years ago America underwent a seismic shift. It dramatically changed the landscape of America, Americans, and amphibians. Of course I am talking about how insurance companies market themselves. It isn’t about strength, reliability, and trust but rather how funny they can be with geckos, falcons, and farmers. (As we all know, the only purchase decisions you should base on hilariousness are gym management software and billing companies). But I digress…what can we learn from these ads?

Finally I have something bad to say about social media
This week a study came out that said teens who use Facebook are more likely to be narcissistic, and alcoholics, (with an added bonus of depression and anxiety). Two things really struck me as odd as I was reading the study. The first, which has nothing to do with our industry, is how could any parent allow their kid to be in the control group?! And second, with the explosion of social media marketing, has anybody stopped to think what the downside is…

Shouldn’t your club have its own Shark Week?
I love Shark Week. Not because I have some deep love for watching the ocean’s apex predator swim through crystal clear blue waters while some insane cameraman films the whole thing. And it’s not because I have a particularly deep affinity to saving sharks (I do feel like I’m helping out by NOT eating shark fin soup!). No, the real reason I like Shark Week, is because it is an example of the kind of marketing that every gym owner should be thinking about.
